Anotace:

Cambridge University Press vydalo zajímavou publikaci „The Middle Ages in 50 Objects“, která se atraktivním způsobem, propojením obrazu a erudovaného textu, snaží přiblížit širšímu publiku nejen středověkou kulturu.

Autorky vybraly celkem padesát předmětů, jejichž prostřednictvím seznamují čtenáře nejen s jejich historií, ale i kulturou, která je vytvořila. Nevybíraly pouze mezi hmotnými poklady, které vznikly ve středověké západní Evropě, ale zaměřily se i na předměty byzantského a islámského původu.

Kniha je rozdělena do celkem čtyř tematických oddílů, které přibližují důležité oblasti lidského života: Svatí a věřící, Hříšní a strašidelní, Každodenní život a Smrt a její následky. Každý oddíl je řazen chronologicky. Nejstarší předměty vznikly ve 3. století, nejmladší na počátku století šestnáctého. Jednotlivé předměty jsou představeny fotografií a především pak erudovaným textem, jenž je věnován nejen vizuální stránce objektu, ale i jeho významu, který je zasazen do širšího kulturního kontextu. Součástí publikace jsou též četné mapy, které dokládají další zajímavé souvislosti. (SK)
