Londýn: Nakladatelství Thames & Hudson vydalo v brožované podobě knihu o umění starých Piktů - fascinující zážitek pro milovníky umění doby stěhování národů

Anotace:

Londýnské nakladatelství Thames & Hudson vydalo v brožované podobě nádhernou knihu o umění starých Piktů (The Art of the Picts), která detailně seznamuje zájemce s kulturou raně středověkého Skotska.

Autory textu jsou George Henderson (profesor středověkého umění z University of Cambridge) a jeho žena Isabel Henderson, oba renomovaní znalci „ostrovního" umění v době stěhování národů.

Skotští Piktové (z latinského slova picti, což jest „pomalovaní", protože svoje tělo údajně pokrývali malovanými obrázky a tetováním) byli společně s Kelty z Irska tradičními nepřáteli antických Římanů. Poprvé se o nich dozvídáme v roce 297, kdy historikové zaznamenali jejich útok na Hadriánův val. V roce 843 Kenneth I. MacAlpin založil království Alba a stal se současně i králem Piktů: položil tak základy historického Skotska.

Piktové vytvořili svébytné umění, které se radikálně liší od antické tradice a má blízko k obrazotvornosti Keltů. Nejvíce je zajímali komplikované ornamenty, pokud zobrazovali lidi nebo zvířata, tak je pojímali jako znaky a symboly. Po přijetí křesťanství se u nich objevují motivy kříže.

Nejslavnějšími památkami jsou monumentální kamenné stély a kříže, pokryté jejich symboly a ornamenty. Hendersonovi srovnávají obdobné motivy na kamenných monumentech s raně středověkými rukopisy a s dobovým zlatnictvím. Tři sta nádherných černobílých fotografií pak představuje kompletní slovník imaginace dávných Piktů.
