New Haven: Romanesque Architecture – chystá se nový díl slavné série dějin umění Pelican History of Art

Anotace:

Dosavadních přibližně padesát dílů nejslavnější anglicky psané série dějin umění Pelican History of Art, kterou nyní vydává americké univerzitní nakladatelství Yale University Press, bude od května obohaceno o nový svazek věnovaný románské architektuře.

Autorem díla je Eric Fernie, mimo jiné autor často citované knihy The Architecture of Norman England, kterou v roce 2000 vydalo nakladatelství Oxford University Press.

Kniha Romanesque Architecture by měla nabídnout dějiny architektury západního křesťanství především v 11. a 12. století, hlavní pozornost bude soustředěna na Itálii, kapetovskou Francii, Burgundsko, Provensálsko, Španělsko, Normandii, Anglii, Svatou zemi, Německo a střední Evropu.

Fernie se vyzná i v románské architektuře v Čechách, pro anglický sborník Zoë Opačić Prague and Bohemia napsal v roce 2009 studii o kostele sv. Bartoloměje v Kyjích u Prahy.

Nová syntéza v mnohém nahradí a doplní v rámci edice Pelican History of Art dosavadní klasickou práci Carolingian and Romanesque Architecture, 800-1200, kterou publikoval před více než půl stoletím Kenneth J. Conant.

In a new addition to the Pelican History of Art series, leading architectural historian Eric Fernie presents a fascinating survey of Romanesque architecture and the political systems that gave rise to the style. It is known for its thick walls, round arches, piers, groin vaults, large towers, and decorative arcading, as well as the measured articulation of volumes and surfaces. Romanesque architecture was the first distinctive style to dominate western and central Europe.

The book explores the gestation of the style in the ninth and tenth centuries and its survival up to the fourteenth century. Eric Fernie was director of the Courtauld Institute of Art between 1995 and 2003 and president of the Society of Antiquaries of London from 2004 until 2007.
